As part of the health awareness initiatives, an educational activity was organised for patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa and some Healthcare Specialists to highlight the importance of oral health and proper care for individuals with EB in Jordan. Epidermolysis Bullosa is a condition that significantly affects the skin and mucous membranes, making oral care particularly challenging for patients. The education day was organised by DEBRA Jordan/Butterfly Wings organisation.
The activity included detailed information on how to prevent oral ulcers that may affect people with EB. EB patients often face difficulties in cleaning and or brushing their teeth naturally due to the fragility of the tissues around the mouth. Emphasis was placed on the necessity of using a very soft toothbrush and avoiding substances that may cause irritation or injury to the mouth.
Additionally, the importance of regular visits to a dentist was discussed, ensuring overall oral health and early monitoring for any signs that may indicate deterioration in dental or oral health. Proper nutrition was also highlighted as a crucial factor in strengthening tissues and mucous membranes, along with the need to stay well-hydrated by drinking enough water to maintain moisture in the mouth.
This activity was conducted with the Department of Dentistry at the University of Jordan Hospital, under the supervision of Dr. Yazan Hassouna, a professor specialist in oral and dental healthcare for individuals with special needs, in collaboration with The Butterfly Wings Organisation for Palliative Care. The necessary support was provided by the medical teams from both sides to raise awareness among patients about the importance of oral care and how to prevent related health issues.
Through this initiative, patients were provided with effective tools and methods to help prevent oral health problems associated with the condition, encouraging them to adopt a healthy and sustainable routine that improves their daily quality of life.
